Biography

Derrick is an outgoing young man who describes himself as athletic and social as well as someone who has “style.” His favorite sports include football and basketball. In school, he has identified mathematics and science as his two favorite subjects, but outside of school Derrick enjoys reading fiction books.

When asked to discuss his future career plans, Derrick replied, “I have back-up plans for my back-up plans…” Derrick explained that he has considered possibly enlisting in the Marine Corps, or pursuing a career in law enforcement, or learning how to become an auto mechanic in the future. Derrick also has a very creative side to him. He has recently started writing poetry and song lyrics as a way to help process and express the challenging thoughts, feeling and memories that he has.

Derrick says that he would prefer to live in a more urban environment and would be comfortable with just a mom, just a dad, or both. He also states that he would be comfortable with a family of any race/ethnicity as long as they would value his racial/ethnic background which is African American, Puerto Rican and/or Nicaraguan. Derrick is very eager to become a permanent part of a healthy and accepting forever family that will give him the safety and security to heal while empowering him to grow and reach his full potential.

Derrick would thrive with a forever family who is patient, fun-loving, and committed to him. All families will be considered for Derrick on a case-by-case basis. He is legally free for adoption.
